Hydrated lime pasteurization

technique.


  • Hydrated Lime (bunnings)
  • Chopped straw, sugar cane mulch is
  • fine.
  • Gloves, mask, glasses, protective
  • clothing.
  •  A measuring cup.
  •  A large bucket for the straw and lime water to soak in.
  •  A onion bag or burlap sack.
  • Water for bucket (measure the amount in liters.)
  •  A bucket to grow in.
  • Micropore tape for the holes.
  • 70 percent Isopropyl alcohol
  • Scales for weighing Lime.
  • Clean hands and fast work.
  • A spray bottle for your 70 percent ISO alcohol.
  • A cool dark room 20-24 degrees for incubation.
  • A cool indirect light room for fruiting your mushrooms 19-25 degrees.

What we are doing is pasteurizing the

chopped straw using the lime to raise the

PH of the water and therefore killing off

most of the existing spores and non-

beneficial bacteria.


This technique actually leaves some of the

beneficial bacteria which assists the fungi of

the oyster mushroom to grow throughout

the substrate.


Care must be taken using hydrated lime as

it can cause skin irritation, dermatitis,

respiratory tract burns if inhaled.

USE PPE every time you use this product.

The steps

  • Measure your water in liters for your large bucket.
  • Weigh out your hydrated lime 4 grams per liter of water used. 
  • Mix it into the water.
  •  Place your chopped straw into a bag that will drain the excess lime water away when pasteurized.
  • Add your chopped straw/sugarcane mulch to your bucket of lime water and soak for 18-24 hours.
  • Drain as much liquid as you can using your gloves squeeze it out a bit. (Don’t do this over your nice grass it may harm it due to the PH of the lime water.)
  •  Lay your straw on the (CLEAN) table & add your grain spawn at a high ratio of spawn to straw. After cleaning everything (container and gloves/hands with ISO) pack into your container.
  • Incubate until all white in a cool dark place.
  • Take off your micropore tape and let it fruit in a lit cool place. Not direct sunlight.

Personal protective equipment Use scales and measure your water. 70 percent ISO

Make sure you use Protective clothes, Gloves,

Eye protection and a face mask to prevent any

accidents with Hydrated lime and Isopropyl

alcohol.


Using this tech requires pasteurization which

works pretty well most of the time. If the

measurements are out forget it.


Its common to forget but you must be overly

clean. Spray and wipe everything. Use gloves,

mask, hair net. Anything you can to stop

contamination. You are a citizen scientist now so

think clean.
